Wallace, Kansas – 1891
Emmie Sheffield and her sister, Wendy, have spent their whole lives being best friends and confidantes. Things are going well for them at the Stewart House hotel, but Wendy clearly has dreams of getting married and settling down instead of spending the rest of her days as a working woman.
Emmie, on the other hand, has no desire to get married and instead prefers to spend her time reading books, fantasizing about someday opening a library in town. Her desires quickly shift when she receives a letter of response from a smart and charming young lawyer named David Cline. The trouble is, she never sent a letter to him in the first place!
Upon discovering that her friend set the wheels in motion in an attempt to play matchmaker, Emmie decides to write back to the gentleman out of kindness and for fear of hurting his feelings. They soon begin a wonderful correspondence and, before long, Emmie catches herself dreaming of life as a happily married woman. This dream is made easier for her by the fact that her new beau shares the same absolute passion for books as she does and she soon makes plans to meet him in person to test the waters.
Will Mr. Cline turn out to be as incredible in real life as he comes across in his beautiful letters, or has Emmie’s head been in the clouds so long that she’s lost touch with reality?
